Matt Hanson Wins IRONMAN 70.3 Cartagena

img_0785First Endurance triathlete Matt Hanson put together a winning swim-bike-run combo to earn his first IRONMAN 70.3 victory at IRONMAN 70.3 Cartagena.

A Colombian port city on the Caribbean coast, Cartagena  has a deep history stemming back to the 16th century. The picturesque city is walled with century old colonial stone walls with streets lined by cobble stones.

The South American city has a year round tropical climate and the day of race was particularly hot & humid for the athletes. Hanson explained why the conditions played into his favor. “I typically race very well in the heat. Much of this is due to having my nutrition plan dialed in very well. EFS-PRO is a great product all of the time, but I think it is light years ahead of anything else when racing in the heat. I am able to get the calories I need and the electrolytes necessary to continue to function. I was able to even split in the bike and run consistently throughout. I couldn’t be happier to be partnered with a nutrition company who pays attention to the details and knows what elite athletes need for racing and training.”

Hanson normally focuses on the full IRONMAN distance but decided to work on his speed at the tail end of the season and get in a few more races in a short time frame. Putting together the 7th fastest swim, 2:37 behind the fastest swimmer, the 2nd fastest ride and a race best run, Hanson pulled off his first IRONMAN 70.3 win stating

“I am very happy with how the race went, I feel that I executed the game plan that I put together with my coach perfectly. I really enjoyed the series of 70.3’s that I did this fall and am happy to end the season with a 3rd, 2nd, and a 1st! Definitely excited about 2017!”

“The city of Cartagena did an amazing job setting up this event! Definitely one that is on my to-do list again!”
