Josiah Middaugh X Alabama 2016The XTERRA standout, Josiah Middaugh, notched another victory at the 4th stop of the 2016 XTERRA Pan American Tour at Oak Mountain State Park in Alabama, extending his overall lead in the series.

Having won XTERRA Tahiti the previous weekend Middaugh stated “I was feeling surprisingly good after a lot of travel” and ready to tackle XTERRA Alabama. “I have had a love hate relationship with this course since it requires a little different skill set. In 2006 I shattered my kneecap while pre riding the course and had surgery in Alabama.”

Calm waters and warm temperatures made for perfect race conditions that saw Middaugh exit the swim 2 minutes 36 seconds back of the leader, Mauricio Mendez. Clawing back 19 seconds in transition along with a race best ride bettering Mendez by over 3 minutes, Middaugh was in the drivers seat but with under a minute to spare heading into the run. “I knew it was going to take a tremendous effort on the bike just to get back in the race. I rode into second place about half way, but it would take me the rest of the ride to finally catch Mauricio with 2 miles to go.”

Despite Mendez clocking the fastest run, 40 seconds quicker than Middaugh’s second fastest run split, Middaugh battled all the way to the finish ahead of Mendez. “I was able to put about 50 seconds on him going into the run and I needed almost all of it to hold him off. With about 2 miles to go he was just 10-15 seconds behind.”

Middaugh won with an 11-second margin of victory, pumped to win the battle on the day.

“I still had a little in the tank to hold him off this time. A hard fought victory is always very rewarding.”
