My name is Holly Breck, and I’m a cyclist from Claremont, CA. I got my start in professional sports as a motocross rider, but have been cycling for almost 10 years now, and am undertaking a privateer calendar this season.
"People won't remember what you said or did, they will remember how you made them feel."
Sprinter’s Jersey Winner
6th Place
3rd Place
What are your season goals?
Win!
What’s your favorite quote and where did you first hear it?
“At the end of the day, people won't remember what you said or did, they will remember how you made them feel.” — Maya Angelou
A good friend of mine sent this to me after a rough season, and it was exactly what I needed to hear at the time. It’s stuck with me ever since.
Who is your favorite author and what is their best work?
I'm not a huge book reader, but I do love to read books about athletic performance. Mind Gym by Gary Mack and David Casstevens, and Habits that Make a Champion by Allister McCaw are two that really stand out.
What’s the best training advice you’ve ever received and who gave it to you?
“Does it Matter? Just ride your bike.” — Patrick Caro
How did you get started in your sport?
I always made fun of my brother for getting a road bike, but I needed a better cardio base for motocross, so I bought one, too. The rest is history.
What’s the worst advice you’ve ever gotten?
Don’t eat on rides, only use water.
If you had to be shipwrecked on a deserted island, but all your human needs—such as food and water—were taken care of, what two items would you want to have with you?
A lighter to start a fire and a big knife to chop things down.
If you could have one superpower, which would you choose and why?
Unlimited watts, so I could win every race.
What’s your favorite website?
firstendurance.com ;)
When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A professional athlete
What would you do if you won the lottery?
First, I would pay my parents back for all the stuff they have bought and supported me with over the years. Then, I would buy a piece of property in the mountains, build a little cabin, run a small farm with goats, chickens, and pigs, and help my close friends with the things they need.
Describe your first bike.
My very first bike was actually a moto: a pink and white Yamaha PW 80. As for bicycles, my first was a 2006 KHS half-carbon, half-aluminum race bike. I planned to buy it off of a friend, but she surprised me by “sponsoring” me with it. I won my first state championship on that bike as a cat 4!
What’s the craziest thing that’s ever happened to you?
A friend and I got lost at the Tijuana border at midnight while trying to get home. Eventually, we ended up downtown, where a stranger jumped into the back of our car. As neither of us were Spanish speakers, it was a tricky situation!
What’s your favorite movie and why?
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and When Nature Calls, because they combine my love of stupid humor and animals.
Describe yourself with one word.
Adventurous
If you were starring in a movie, what would your theme song be?
“The Magic School Bus Theme” by Geek Music
Proudest sporting moment? Proudest life moment?

Breakfast burritos

I love music, and the right song really depends on what I'm doing.
Where is your “happy” place?
In amongst trees, on a great single track, or on a really cool switchbacky road in the mountains.
What is your most memorable meal?
Some type of food in Europe for sure.
What is something that you learned from a parent or grandparent that has guided you in life?
In life, whatever you put out into the world is what you get back. My parents and grandparents always told me to be thankful for everything that I have and never take anything for granted. We never know how long we have, so we should always be kind and help others when we can.
Who is your greatest mentor and what did they teach you?
There are a few people who have left an impact on me. My brother has always been someone I competed with and looked up to, and he has pushed me in every aspect of my athletics. When I first got into cycling, I got to meet Kim Anderson and Aaron Olson, who were not only incredible athletes, but also kind people who answered every newbie question I had. Later in my career, Patrick Caro taught me so much about racing: from how to be aggressive, to how to employ different tactics during races. Not only has he raced with the best, he is an excellent teacher and has guided me through my whole cycling career.
Tell us about your pet(s).
I have a rescue cat named Kitty. She loves to go on adventures, knows to meow at the door when she wants to come in or out, and will even play fetch.
Who is your favorite band or artist and their best album and song?
I’m a huge music fan, and I listen to a wide range, but I always come back to rock and heavy metal. If I had to pick just one artist, it would be Atreyu.

A crisp four-stroke moto or a double bass drum.

VP race fuel

What are your favorite pre-race/event rituals and/or meals?
I start race days with coffee and breakfast burritos; then, about three hours before the race starts, I eat two PB&J sandwiches with gummy bears; finally, 30 minutes before the event, I have a First Endurance Pre-Race bottle, a Mocha Liquid Shot, and all the red gummy bears!

Everyone had a puppy and pygmy goats.

Being a goofball or a couch potato
Two truths and a lie about me:
