Q&A
What’s your favorite quote and where did you first hear it
“The thrill is not just in winning, but in the courage to join the race.” I stole this poster from my dad when I was a kid and always loved it. I always think about it when I have those pre race jitters. I love racing but damn I sure do like just toeing the line.
What’s the worst advice you’ve ever gotten?
Ketogenic diet is great for endurance athletes.
What's the craziest thing that’s ever happened to you?
My wife and I once portaged a 17ft metal canoe straight up a quarter-mile cliff side along with all our gear. It took 13hrs and it is still to this day, it’s still the hardest effort I’ve ever been able to muster.
What is your most memorable meal?
In 2021 we had a bit of a habit of going out for killer meals after some of the harder stage races. After Pais Vasco we ate probably 5lbs of steak each. It was divine and gluttonous and just what the doctor ordered. But after 6 days of racing, all that meat and salt and a couple bottles of wine, I’ve never felt so terrible the next morning. Hangover x10.
What is something that you learned from a parent or grandparent that has guided you in life?
“There’s a time and a place for everything.” My grandmother always used to say that and I firmly believe it. Sort of her variation on, “everything in moderation.”
Tell us about your pet(s).
We have a dog named Reina that goes by Raisin. She’s a good smart dog. Does not understand Spanish. Pretty good w/ English.
What’s your favorite sound?
My daughter laughing.
Finish this sentence: “The world would be a better place if….”
People kept right except to pass.
